Step 2 - Using the water
There are three main methods for the use of your stored water:
Gravity only: Gravity feed of the water from your tank is a suitable option when your land has a fall away from the tank or you can position the tank on a stand. Gravity feed will not replicate the pressure you have from your main water supply and will generally not drive any of your garden sprinklers or irrigation system.
Pump for garden only: This is the most common system we are asked to install. A small electric pressure pump is an ideal solution to enjoy normal mains style water pressure from your tank. All pumps now come standard with a pressure activated system so when you turn on your tap the pump will automatically activate. This system is good for running watering systems and car washing etc.
Pump with internal connections: This is very common with new homes and is growing with our domestic customers. We connect the output from the pump to your toilets and washing machines so that your water tank water is used to service these appliances. This system also requires mains water back up system so that when your tank is empty normal mains water is used.
Usage rates: Most people are surprised to learn that..
- Garden tap at ½ opening uses 1000L per hour
- Drip lines use 600L per hour / 100 metres
- Micro sprayers use approx 2L per minute
- Top loader washing machine 200L per load
- Toilet new systems 3 to 7 litres per flush
- Old systems up to 15L per flush
