Tankworks offers a number of alternative systems for the capture and reuse of rain water. Understanding these systems and options will enable you to work with us in deciding the best solution for your situation.
Step 1 - Capturing the water
The Dry System: This is the most common system and involves overhead pipes connected to your gutters feeding into your tank. This system is called a dry system as the feed pipes run dry after the rain has stopped.
With this system the main consideration is to ensure the watertank height is low enough to allow fall into the watertank and that the overhead pipe work is well supported. |
|
The Wet system: Used for years in the country this system enables the corrugated steel water tank to be positioned away from the water collection source and uses the principle that water will always be level. As the line fills and builds up the water will then spill into the water tank.
When the rain stops water will remain in the pipework and therefore is called a wet system. When installing this kind of system we ensure mosquito protection and pre filtering of the water before it enters the charged system to keep the pipes clear. |
|
Transfer system: A common system for the larger properties and those with existing stormwater pits. Allows the water tank to be placed anywhere on the property with an automatic transfer system installed to pump the water to the storage tank when the pit is filled from rainwater running off the roof pipework system.

|
Capture rate - Use this simple formula:
- Work out how much surface area will be directed into the tank in metres squared. You can do this by pacing out the roof area.
- Multiply this roof area by the number of millimeters of rain
- The calculated value will be the number of litres you will capture
Eg. 50 metres of roof area x 10mm of rain = 500 Litres of water collected.
You can now see the importance of capturing as much roof area as possible. Many people only install one down pipe into their water tank. We recommend trying to get as many as possible where practicable. |
